Description

The College of Charleston’s Race and Social Justice Initiative and the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture are pleased to present a special student screening of the film The Hate U Give. Based on the New York Times bestseller by Angie Thomas, The Hate U Give follows the story of Starr Carter as she navigates life between the poor, primarily black neighborhood in which she lives and the rich, primarily white prep school she attends.

Selected as the 2018-2019 The College Reads! book, the College of Charleston is proud to showcase The Hate U Give because of its strong thematic ties to social justice. By encouraging all students and staff to read the book, the entire book, CofC hopes to open a dialogue concerning race and identity across campus and the greater Charleston community. Angie Thomas, author of The Hate You Give will be giving a lecture entitled “The Hate U Give: Finding Your Activism and Turning the Political into the Personal” on the College of Charleston's campus on Monday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m. in Sottile Theatre.
